We’ve all had dreams of going to space as a kid, and while a small number of astronauts have actually made the leap out of the stratosphere, the chances of you heading to the stars are extremely slim. That’s why a new Kickstarter project from the University of Surrey is aiming to let you experience the full journey to space, all thanks to the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Read on for all the details!

Forget forking out for a ride on Virgin Galactic, if you fancy experiencing the joys of space travel, all you need is this project. Researchers from the University of Surrey have launched a new Kickstarter campaign that will let you “travel” to space, all for less than the price of new Xbox One game. The project, known as Virtual Ride to Space, uses a combination of the Oculus Rift VR headset and a weather balloon that’s filled with 24 high-def GoPro cameras, all of which will capture panoramic footage of the balloon’s voyage to space.

The balloon will rise to a height of 20km, more than twice the height that a regular airplane reaches, and once the footage has been shot, it’ll later be stitched together to recreate the journey. You’ll then be able to view the whole journey as an app for the Oculus Rift, which comes complete with its own soundtrack (or you can add your own epic tunes), and you’ll even be able to speed up, slow down or reverse time during your digital voyage, and you’ll be able to look all around thanks to headset’s VR powers. The team are also looking to develop a smartphone app for around £35 that will let you check out the journey using your handset’s built-in gyroscope and accelerometer, as well as a PC version too.

The project is looking for £30,000, and it’s currently raised £2,754 with 26 days to go. If you fancy heading out to space, but can’t afford the likes of Virgin Galactic, this could be the ticket for you.
